The Great Nicobar Island Project has sparked a heated debate, with Congress leader Jairam Ramesh leading the charge against it. In a strongly worded letter to Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Ramesh paints a dire picture of the project's potential environmental impact, branding it a "recipe for ecological disaster."
Ramesh, a former environment minister, brings a unique perspective to the discussion. He argues that while bolstering India's defense capabilities is crucial, the Great Nicobar project, in its current form, is a commercial venture masquerading as a security necessity. The project, he claims, threatens the region's delicate ecology and the rights of its tribal communities.
The government's press note, "The Great Nicobar Island Project: FAQs," has come under fire from Ramesh. He accuses it of presenting a false narrative, misrepresenting the environmental clearance process and the compliance with the Forest Rights Act, 2006. Ramesh's concerns extend to the project's impact on tribal rights, alleging that the clearance process violates the rights granted to tribal communities by Parliament.
In his letter, Ramesh offers alternative defense infrastructure proposals that he believes would achieve the same strategic goals with significantly lower environmental costs. He highlights the existing INS Baaz facility in Campbell Bay, which has pending plans to extend its runway and build a naval jetty. These proposals, he argues, would have far less adverse environmental impacts.
Ramesh also points to existing assets under the Andaman and Nicobar Command, suggesting that their expansion could strengthen India's military presence in the region without the ecological costs associated with the Great Nicobar project. He questions the strategic necessity of the transshipment port and township, key components of the project, arguing that they do not enhance India's military capability.
"The Great Nicobar Island Project in its present shape and form is a recipe for ecological disaster," Ramesh warns. He urges Singh to consider the alternative proposals, which, he says, have been endorsed by distinguished naval officers.
