Welcome to Connecticut, Day 102: A Hiker's Tale
As an avid hiker, I've always been drawn to the allure of new trails and the sense of adventure they offer. So, when I embarked on my journey through Connecticut, I was eager to explore the state's natural beauty and immerse myself in the hiking culture. Day 102 of my trek was a testament to the unexpected twists and turns that come with long-distance hiking.
The day began with a much-needed sleep-in, allowing me to start my hike later than usual. However, this meant that my progress was slower than expected, and I only managed to cover 0.5 miles by 9 a.m. But, as I ventured into Connecticut, I was excited to explore the state's diverse landscapes and immerse myself in the local culture.
The first mile of the hike was relatively easy, but it soon became clear that the day would be a challenging one. A steep climb over the next couple of miles tested my endurance, and I had to take a relaxed pace to avoid any further discomfort in my feet, which were still adjusting to my new shoes.
One of the highlights of the day was reaching a river that the trail followed along. I spotted Shooter, another hiker, soaking his feet in the cold water, and I couldn't resist joining him. We took a 15-minute break to enjoy the peaceful surroundings and the refreshing water.
As we continued on the trail, we were greeted with a relatively steep climb of 700 feet in less than a mile. It was a challenging ascent, but the view from the top was well worth the effort. I took a moment to appreciate the surrounding countryside and chat with a couple of day hikers.
The next couple of miles were pretty flat, with just minor ups and downs. But, as we approached Kent, we were met with two steep ups and downs, which I trudged through slowly and methodically. I even spotted a snake at one point, a reminder of the unexpected encounters that come with hiking in new territories.
Once in Kent, we made our way to a convenience store for some cold drinks to help hydrate us before heading over to the outfitter. Unfortunately, we arrived right after they closed, but we didn't need anything specific, so we just wanted to check it out and maybe leave our bags there.
We continued on to our next stop, food. We decided to go to Cozzy's on Main, which served burgers and pizza, what we were most interested in currently. The food was really good, and we were able to bring our bags inside, charge electronics, and enjoy a delicious meal together.
After dinner, we headed over to the grocery store to resupply with a couple of days' worth of food and then headed back to the trail. We wanted to get to the Stewart Hollow Brook Shelter before dark, and we just made it in time. Although once again, we were setting up in the dark.
The hike went well enough, especially since some of it went right along the Housatonic River, a lovely backdrop to an evening hike. But, as I reflect on the day, I can't help but think about the unexpected challenges and the sense of accomplishment that comes with overcoming them. It's these moments that make hiking such a rewarding and fulfilling experience.
In my opinion, Day 102 of my trek through Connecticut was a testament to the beauty of nature and the resilience of the human spirit. It was a day filled with unexpected twists and turns, but it was also a day filled with moments of peace and tranquility. As I continue on my journey, I look forward to the next adventure that awaits me, and I know that the memories I've made on this trek will stay with me for a lifetime.
